Airstream Restoration Overview

In this episode of Classic Rides, host Kevin Tetz gives an important piece of advice that is useful before getting started on your restoration project. He says that it is a good idea to research and find out what resources and information pertaining to your project are available, in this case, the 1970 Airstream Overlander Yacht Trailer.

Those planning to restore vintage Airstreams will be happy to know that there is a wealth of information available on this brand's vehicles. Kevin found an owner's manual specifically for this 1970 Overlander model. The manual is still in good condition and contains all the information needed about the trailer's original parts. It has all the technical specs, a list of all the systems and appliances included inside, as well as a towing guide.

Kevin also found a 1970 sales brochure for the same model. He likes it because it has great photos that show off the trailer's features. According to Kevin, these photos can give a glimpse into the past for styling cues and inspiration, if your plan is to fix up the RV back to its original style. He also found a magazine that is dedicated to the Airstream lifestyle, aptly called Airstream Life Magazine. He says that inside you'll find actual tips and guides with the restored vehicles that other people have done.

He also recommends the Airstream website, which is complete with information on the company's history, its past and current models and gives you a glimpse into the "Airstream Culture". He also recommends surfing the net as there are several active forums and vintage communities that will answer your questions or problems regarding your restoration project. He also encourages visiting his show's website, www.diynetwork.com.

In this episode, Kevin introduces the WBCCI or the WBCCI or Wally Bayam Caravanners Club International. This club was formed in 1955, in honor of Airstream's founder Wally Bayam. Being a part of this club will be of great help so that you will meet other members who will give you great advice and insights on your project because they have actually been in your shoes before.

This episode also shows how the Airstream trailer is constructed, starting with the assembly of the thin aluminum sheets, installation of interiors up to the final wash and rinse. Kevin says that the vintage RVs were also made similarly to how they are made today. He shows us the Clipper Travel Trailer, the first trailer Wally Bayam made, saying that these trailers were different because from those available at that time because of their unique aircraft-like design.

The video shows an Airstream trailer being pulled along by a bike, showing how its aerodynamic design and aluminum construction makes it is so lightweight and portable. It is not flimsy however, as it also shows the trailers being tenacious enough as it was exposed to rough conditions. Truly, the Airstream trailer combines quality and durability in one stylish package.
