Air Conditioner

Airstream Air Conditioner

On this episode of Classic Rides, host Kevin Tetz works on the trailer's air conditioning. Since this trailer is most likely to be used during the summer time, Kevin thinks it is important that the air conditioner is in good shape. He says that the original unit is in sad shape, so he decides to just replace the entire unit.

To do this, he says that he has to disassemble the shroud and loosen things from the bottom side. To get access to this, he removes the curtain rod using a ratchet wrench and the rod and curtain can be removed.

He then removes the knobs of the air conditioner and removes the cover. Even if the power of the AC is turned off, he meters it to make sure it has a zero read. He pulls the harness loose and disconnects the mounting bolts. For long bolts, he recommends using a long socket wrench.

When the shroud comes down, he disconnects the power but leaves enough wire to connect to the new unit. Again, he uses the platform scissor lift to get above the trailer. He enlists the help of RV expert Xavier Taylor to help him. He loosens the unit from the top. Blankets make it easier to slide the unit down.

The new unit is a low-profile, 15,000 BTU, the highest rated RV unit available. He cleans the mounting surface before installing the new unit on. Then he and Xavier lift the new unit on top of the RV. Xavier knows how to straddle the braces on top of the roof as he is very experienced with tasks like these.

Kevin mounts the duct inside the trailer and screws the bolts tightly. This pulls the unit down and creates a tight seal on the roof. For the wiring, he uses a multi-pick connector that simply plugs into place. He cuts away the shielding and strips the wires. He installs the wire nuts, tucks them into the junction box. And he secures the junction box cover.

Kevin then mounts the shroud, using a piece of foam to fill the curved space. Then he puts in the filter grates, which have reusable filter. Lastly, he puts in the control knobs.
