Airstream Inspection

Airstream Inspection Prior to Restoration Start
In this segment of Classic Rides, Kevin Tetz consults with RV specialist Xavier, to inspect the vintage Airstream 1970 Overlander Land Yacht trailer he is working on. Kevin asks Xavier to check on the overall condition of the system for safety and make sure to correct that part before moving on to the cosmetic part of the restoration.
Kevin asks Xavier what he found during his inspection. Xavier says that he first checked out the gas tanks, which are still the original tanks that came with the trailer, and thus need to be replaced. And although the regulator has been changed to a newer one, it still shows age. The hoses have a lot of cracks, and Xavier says that this pose a major safety issue. He says that they definitely have to replace all the hoses and update the gas bottles.
Xavier adds that the valves do not have any protection, and that the newer models now come with safety features. And instead of the brackets that are originally attached to the trailer, they can install new ones that have an equalizing anti-sway hitch system. He also notes that the breakaway switch is still the original one, and has to be updated too.
Kevin and Xavier move on the access compartment for the back of the trailer's refrigerator to show the current refrigerator that is installed in the vintage trailer. According to Ken, this fridge is electric--a residential type or one commonly found in homes. He adds that the best type of fridge is one that runs on both electricity and gas, so that it can still be used for camping without city power.
Xavier tells Kevin that the hitch looks good and the weld looks strong. The original breakaway switch also needs updating. Xavier also points out that the trailer is equipped with a DC electrical system, meaning it has an AC 110 hookup and a DC 12 volt battery power. Xavier says that the batteries need to be replaced with those specially made for an RV. These batteries are called deep cycle or deep cell marine battery, as these store power longer, which is important for outdoor camping.
Another safety concern is the cook top, which has a bad gas valve, and must be changed. The furnace vent, air-conditioning and tires are all old and need to be updated too. But all in all, Xavier says that the restoration work to be done should be easy. Kevin ends the segment by reminding us to check out the resources and information on the show on their website, www.diy.com
