Aluminum Wall
Video # 10
Airstream Aluminum Wall Install
In this episode of Classic Rides, host Kevin Tetz is very happy with the painting job he has done on the bathroom. He says that his paint treatments made a dramatic improvement on the bathroom's look. However, he says, there is still the problem of the cracked wallpaper. He decides that an aluminum wall treatment is the best solution.
He starts with tracing out the wall pattern with a tracing paper. He then gets two sheets of aluminum, measuring 36 x 36 inches each, that cost around forty dollars. He uses an overlapping method to join the two sheets together so that it creates a water seal, so that there is not water penetration to the backside of the wall.
He then traces a pattern over the aluminum sheets. He uses an electric shear to make a nice, clean cut on the aluminum. To prevent the shears from marking the sheets, he protects the aluminum with tape. He tells us to remember to align the cutter edge with the cut marks. He also tells us to leave allowance for the piece of metal that will be removed while it is shearing. He made a quarter of an inch allowance, to give some wiggle room.
To demonstrate how he will apply aluminum to wallboard of Airstream, he uses a sample board with smaller sheets of aluminum. He uses an adhesive and pop rivet to install it on the wallboard. He says that you need to spray both surfaces with a contact adhesive and let the glue tack a bit, so that glue does not string.
He cautions us not to plop the aluminum sheets on the wall board as you only have one shot at doing this. You should align one edge so you can adjust and roll it on. Repeat this with the other piece of aluminum in an overlapping manner.
To secure the aluminum sheets on the wall, he uses pop rivets. Kevin says it gives the wall treatment an authentic Airstream look. You can use an inexpensive and easy to use hand riveter. He uses a sample piece of wood that is about the same thickness of the Airstream bathroom wall to demonstrate. He uses silicon on each rivet to create a water seal.
