Airstream Bathroom Window Restoration
In this segment of Classic Rides, host Kevin Tetz continues with the bathroom restoration of the vintage 1970 Airstream Overland Yacht Trailer that he is working on.
He removed the back window out of the Airstream because it needs a little bit of work. It has a deteriorated seal and hardware needs replaced. At the same time, he wants to remove the old crusty film, since it is peeling and cracked, and just generally looks nasty.
He shows us how to remove the file and says that there are kits available to help us with this. He sprays a solution on to the film and covers it with a sheet of plastic. The plastic prevents the solution from evaporating. After the solution has been on for a few hours, he removes the plastic and starts scraping it out with a single-edged razor blade. He uses a glass cleaner to clean the glass very thoroughly. He cautions us not to use an ammonia based cleaner as it may discolor the film.
Now that the glass is thoroughly cleaned, Kevin shows us how to put the new film on. Kevin chose a silver film to give the user some privacy while allowing a lot of light in. Cut the film to the approximate size. Then, taking soapy water and saturating the glass with it, film is applied to glass and the water is squeegeed out. He stuck pieces of tape to both sides of the window film so that he could easily remove the backing. Then the backing is removed by just separating it from the rest of the film.
The original 12-volt vanity light of the bathroom, and it runs off the house vanity just like all the 12-volt lights in the trailer. Kevin replaces the old lights with new ones that have brush-nickled fixtures for the Airstream. With the power disconnected, he cuts the wires, leaving as much wire as possible for the new fixture. He strips the wires and connects the new color-coded wires and secures them with a wire nut. He wraps the connections with electrical tape. He installs the new bulbs into the new fixtures.
Now the entire bathroom looks clean and inviting. They also installed a new toilet as well as some fun accessories such as a printed shower curtain and colorful towels.
