Bedroom Countertop Restoration

The restoration of the 1970 Airstream Overland Yacht is now moving along quickly. Classic Rides' Kevin Tetz now shows us the restoration of the trailer's bedroom.
The original bed in this Airstream is a double bed, which is really a three-quarter bed. He wants to bring this trailer to the 21st Century by updating its countertop treatment, storage compartments, installing aluminum blinds and restoring the gaucho couch.

He begins with the bedroom countertop. The original countertop was covered with a dark laminate, which was stylish in the 1970's. But it looks really heavy and dark now. Kevin wants to replace it with a cool aluminum treatment. He starts by covering the countertop with sheet aluminum.

He measures out the dimensions of the countertop plus 11/16 of an inch for the lip of the counter. He also laid down tape along the cut lines to protect the surface of the aluminum. He warns us to always use heavy-duty gloves and eye protection when working with metal, which can be very sharp. He uses an electric shear to cut the metal because it gives a really straight cut. He aligns the edge of the shear with the cut line.

Then he measures and marks his bending line for the lip of the counter top. And he goes ahead and bends the ninety-degree lip, using a metal bending break, which can be purchased in supply stores. He cautions us not to over bend it as we want a true ninety-degree angle. He also adds some silver plastic trim to the lip of the counter top.

Now he is ready to put the countertop in place. He uses a spray adhesive but masks the surrounding area to protect it from overspray. He gives the countertop a light even coat as well as to the surface he is applying it on. He maneuvers the piece into the area and presses it down. He applies tape on edges and uses his finger to smooth it out so that any excess glue will not splatter.
