Airstream Credenza

The original living room of the Airstream Overland Yacht Trailer features classic 1970's Airstream styling. Kevin believes that this living room is now ready for a makeover.

He shows us the credenza door for the cupboard in the living area. The door is nice, according to him, because it was refinished. But he thinks that the insert can be improved.

For the new insert, Kevin uses a cut piece from Plexiglas that is decorated. He uses the old glass as a template to mark the cut line on the new Plexiglas. Kevin uses a Plexiglas tool to cut the new insert and cuts on the backside of the insert. He demonstrates how to make a perfect straight edge by popping the razored edge along the side of the table.

To add a decorative flair to the insert, Kevin created a box design using household electric tape on the Plexiglas surface. Then he sanded down the entire uncovered surface using a household scuffing pad, finding the edges and put enough pressure on them. He is aiming for a brushed look inside the squares so he is scrubbing in one direction. Then he removes the tape from the areas that are not scuffed, and voila! A nice, clean-cut pattern is revealed.

Kevin's friend David helps him with installing the credenza. The first thing they need to do is mount the cabinet to the floor and to the back wall. Kevin refurbished the credenza with the same laminate that was used in the kitchen. They also installed an LP gas monitor inside the credenza. An LP gas monitor can help detect gas leaks. This is available in most hardware store.

They installed the frosted glass insert in the credenza. Kevin thinks that it looks great against the rich, refinished wood and aluminum trim of the cabinet. The trailer's interiors are coming together--a blend of vintage design with modern, industrial touches.

Kevin also works on the fold-up table, which features a really cool hinge tool that allows it to fold up. The table just slides into place beside the cabinet area. It has a fold down leg for support. Kevin also used the same vintage boomerang design for the tabletop.

The last piece of the living room is the new living room sofa bed, which is designed for RVs. It can be used as a living room couch as well.
