Airstream Emblem Restoration

In this episode of Classic Rides, restoration and bodywork specialist Kevin Tetz works on the details if thus 1970's Airstream Overland Yacht Trailer. Before starting on this phase of the project, Kevin recommends ordering all the tools necessary and having them on hand so that the restoration will go along smoothly.

Kevin says that the Airstream forums online were really useful in giving him information and instructions on how to go about the little details in this restoration.
Kevin starts off with the Airstream emblem, which is really old and dingy. He uses an abrasive pad to wipe the letters. Then he uses a white towel with solvent to remove the sand and dust. He finishes off with 180-grit sandpaper to shine up the front edges.

To paint the Airstream emblem, Kevin wants to use spray paint that is applied with a brush. So he sprays the paint on to the lid, and uses a small brush to fill in the letters one by one. He lets the first coat of paint dry and uses a second coat. He also uses a lacquer thinner to clean out the edges.

He also replaces the handle on the trailer's front door. He pries out the old door and removes the excess metal with a rotary grinding tool. He seals exterior holes too and installs the new handle.

Next he works on the exterior AC outlet. He replaces the plate and gasket on the old outlet by scraping the old gasket off. He secures the new ones with screws.
The latch that holds the front door open was rusted and broken. Kevin removed the old latch and cleaned out the area using a solvent and a fine abrasive pad. And he applied sealant to exterior holes to prevent leaking. He installs the new latch and adds rivets to hold them in place.
