Airstream Kitchen Sink Replacement

In this episode of Classic Rides, host Kevin Tetz works on the new sink. He throws away the old sink and gets the help of master plumber Jeff Grigg for this part of the project.

He uses a sink made of composite materials like fiberglass. Jeff suggests putting everything you can in the sink before laying it in, so that Kevin does not have to go underneath the sink later on. Great idea!

Kevin uses a drift punch to knock out a second hole for the water filter spout. They feed the water line into the hole, install the spout, add the rubber seal, washer and nut. Then he tightens the nut to secure the spout into place in the sink.

He lets Jeff do the honors of installing the faucet. The faucet, like the waterspout, has a rubber seal, so it does not require plumber's putty. They put on the mounting hardware and screw the nut into place. Lastly, the mounting screws are tightened down. After which, they connect the spout line to the supply line by snapping it on into place.

Next, they work on putting the basket in the sink. They have a water gasket and a paper gasket for the backside. They apply a bead of plumber's putty to secure the gaskets. Kevin says that the plumber's putty should be rolled out like a rope to about an inch thick. He wraps it around the bottom of the basket and pressed along the sides to create a good seal.

Kevin inserts the basket into the drain hole and presses it into place. The plumber's putty creates the seal. He installs the rubber and paper gaskets on the backside. Then he screws in the lock neck. Jeff uses a drain wrench to hold the basket in place. Then, Jeff uses a basket wrench to tighten the mount. As he tightens the wrench, the putty squeezes out from the side of the basket. He simply rolls of this excess putty.

Kevin and Jeff hook up the water supply lines, the cold water line, and the hot water line, which they will connect to the water shut out valves in the trailer. Then, they tighten the fittings down.

Before installing the sink into the countertop, Kevin applies a bead of silicone around the outside edges of the sink area, to give it a nice, watertight seal. Together, Jeff and Kevin install the sink on the countertop. Kevin uses clamps on the backside and on the front of the sink.

Jeff installs the water filter on to the bracket that is attached to the back wall. The water filter line is connected to the T-fitting of the cold water line, and tightened down with a 5/8’s wrench. The blue line from the filter spout is hooked up to the unit.

Jeff adds a piece of pipe to the main drain line to hook up the sink drain and a trap pipe to connect to the sink's main tail piece. Jeff also adds a counter weight to the faucet line to keep the tension on the pull out faucet. They test the sink, and it works!
