Airstream Kitchen Wall Restoration
In this episode of Classic Rides, restoration and bodywork specialist Kevin Tatz will renovate and revitalize the 1970 Airstream Overland Yacht Trailer's kitchen. He is nearly halfway through the restoration of the vintage RV he is working on. Most of the original interior was straight out of the 1970's--really old and dated.
Kevin and the rest of the Classic Rides team removed most of the interiors so that it would be easier for them to move around the RV. They replaced most of the major systems on the RV, such as the water and heating. They also installed a ventilator and a new air conditioner.
For the kitchen, Kevin plans to redo the counter top, install a new sink and faucet and new appliances. He envisions an industrial look for the kitchen. So he wants to install a new aluminum back splash on the walls, as inspired by the photos of the restored Airstreams that he saw.
He uses a laminate that has a brushed aluminum look. He first makes a paper pattern and uses a metal shear to cut out the laminate. He uses a rotary cutter to cut out shapes within the board, to accommodate light switches and the AC outlet. He also made a window cut out.
Kevin enlists the help of David Trennon in installing the back splash. They applied construction adhesive to the sides and center of the back splash area. Then, they spread the adhesive out evenly, making sure they applied it on the areas where there are cut out areas, like the window and AC outlet areas.
The adhesive won't set immediately, so they were able to adjust it. Then they drilled rivets into place, making sure they drilled through the laminate and to the wall. They also applied protective plastic while drilling the rivets onto the back splash.
