Airstream Lighting

Kevin Tetz, host of the show Classic Rides, moves into the "homestretch" of the 1970 Airstream Overland Yacht Trailer restoration. Kevin shows us a video of a vintage Airstream ad that shows off the Airstream's interiors. The color scheme was olive and gold. The materials were laminates and plastics. But instead of restoring this Airstream back to its original design, Kevin opts for a modern look for this trailer's interiors.

Kevin enlists the help of Terry Cooper from Texas State Technical College to do the lighting upgrades on the interiors. Terry tells us about the 12-Volt systems in RVs, saying that typically RV owners use the lighting system and power it with 12-Volts. That way, even if the are dry-docked and have no access to 110-Volts, they can use the RV's batteries.

Kevin and Terry remove the old lighting fixtures and are left with a ceiling that needs to be covered up. Terry makes a plate to cover the bare spots and installs a switch into the plate, so that the lighting can be controlled.

Terry wants to put in some track lighting into the trailer, that way there is a lot of versatility and control over the lighting. Terry connects the new switch plate wires to the main red hotwire and to the jumper hotwire that goes over to the new fixture location.

They also build a base for the track lighting to sit on. They insert the wires from the switch plate into the track and tighten them with screws. The lights simply snap up and twist into the track. He reminds us that when towing the trailer, these track lights should be removed. The end result is nice, soft lighting with lots of versatility.
They also replace the ceiling light in the cap area of the living room. They install a nice globe light in its place. They also install a vintage style reading light on the bed.
