Restoration Plumbing

In this episode of Classic Rides, Kevin Tetz is working on the plumbing of his restoration project. The vehicle is a 1970 Airstream Overlander Land Yacht. Mark Hugget from Zurn Plumbing Products shows Kevin some of the latest plumbing products that will be of help to his restoration project.

Mark shows Kevin a Polyethylene Cross-Linked pipe, more commonly known as PEX. He explains that this is a very flexible pipe that is easy to connect to any of the existing plumbing inside the RV, regardless of whether they are made from copper, CPCV or Polybutylene. Another advantage of the PEX pipe is that it is small enough to get into tight areas with the type of fitting that is being used today.

Mark demonstrates how easy it is to use the PEX pipe by cutting it with a razor knife. He says you can also use a hose cutter. With the PEX pipe, he says, you do not have to worry about re-plumbing the entire trailer, because it can be incorporated to existing appliances and plumbing.

All you have to do is push it into a pipe, tighten the nut, and you're finished. He demonstrates this and adds that you no longer need to use glue and tape. Thus, Mark highly recommends using the PEX pipes for the water heater and water pump for the 1970 Airstream that Kevin is restoring.

Another guest comes down to help Kevin with his project. Master plumber Jeff Grigg helps with the installation of the plumbing. Jeff demonstrates how to install hot and cold water lines for the trailer, using the PEX pipes.

Kevin explains that before installation of the new water heater, they built their floor up so that they have the right clearance and added some guides so that they don't have side-to-side movement. Kevin and Jeff work on installing the new water heater together as well as connecting this to the gas connection.
