Airstream Restoration Trailer Tear Out
In this video, Kevin Tetz shows us how to get started on a restoration project for an American icon--a vintage 1970 Overland Yacht Trailer by Airstream. This segment shows Kevin removing the interiors and appliances that were installed to the trailer. Kevin begins by saying that this project is similar to other remodeling projects in that you have to take things apart in order to get started.
Kevin gives a lot of important pieces of advice on this show. The first is that you must photograph everything you dismantle. Documenting this process is important so that you can identify what you need to replace them with as well as e-mail these photos to different vendors so as to track down exactly what you are trying to find.
The second piece of advice that is worth remembering is that you want to bag and label all the small parts you removed so that you will know which appliance it belongs to. He also recommends spraying the vintage fasteners with penetrating oil before attempting to work on them.
Kevin says that you must get all your materials together before you begin any project. He lays out the materials he needs such as angled drills and a short screwdriver. Before starting the interior tear-out, Kevin shuts off the trailer's power, the AC fuse box and disconnects the battery. In the kitchen, he disconnects the cook top gas line.
Kevin starts the tear-out in the kitchen, removing the counter top, the sink and the gas oven. To remove the countertop, he says that all you have to do is locate the fasteners and remove its screws. Again, he reminds us to bag and label the small parts as you remove them. The entire restoration team helps Kevin out as well in removing the trailer's gaucho couch, cabinets and furnace.
Now that they have removed everything inside the trailer, they can move on to the fun part of the restoration project.
