Airstream Restoration Wall Paint

In this episode of Classic Rides, host Kevin Tetz is working on a 27-foot 1970 Airstream Overland Land Yacht Trailer. Kevin calls it an American icon. But it is in need of some serious refurbishing. He continues working on the classic trailer, this time on its interiors.

According to Kevin, in 1952 up to the late sixties Zolotone paint was used. In fact, a lot of Airstreamer stores still sell this type of paint. The trailer has cream- colored walls on the inside and these look really dingy already. So Kevin decides to give these walls new life.

"The key to any successful paintjob is surface preparation", Kevin preaches. He cleans the surface of the walls using a strong household cleaner to thoroughly cleanse the surface. He says that you can also prep surface by sanding it as you can really get into the crevices of the surface by through this method. He demonstrates how to sand down the wall and picks up loose debris, sweeping them away.

The next step is priming the walls. Kevin says that you must always use a high quality bonding primer. He says that you should use an oil-based primer because later primers might cause the oil covering to separate from the wall. Make sure you let the primer dry. Different manufacturers have different instructions on drying time, so make sure you follow the directions on your primer's packaging.

Once the primer is completely dry, you are ready to apply the topcoat. Kevin says that you shouldn't aim for one hundred percent coverage on the first coat. He also gives us a tip on how to choose brushes for the painting job. He says that brushes with natural bristles should be used for oil-based paints while nylon or polyester brushes should be used for latex paints.

Kevin demonstrates how to paint the walls using a yellow and metallic silver combination. He also removes the window shades of the vista view windows so that he can repaint them as well. He uses spray paint for this and so he puts on a facemask, which he says is important when using spray paint. He spray paints in layers to come up with an even coat.

What a big difference in brightening up the room his painting job has made.
