Airstream Waste System

In this episode of Classic Rides, host Kevin Tetz works on the waste system of the 1970 Airstream Overland Yacht Trailer that he is restoring.
The waste system is one of the things that we don't want to think about, Kevin says, but is a necessary component in all trailers. Luckily, Kevin has the help of "RV Doctor" Gary Bunzer to assist him in dealing with this.

Gary recommends using an electric gate valve, which is one of the newest things on the market today that addresses the waste systems in RVs. According to Gary, one of the most unpleasant things about owning an RV is having to open the trailer's gate valve, which is a manual valve, to dispose of the waste. This is literally a dirty job and an inconvenient one as well.

With the electric gate valve, just the flick of a switch eliminates the need to touch the manual valve and deal with the waste. You can put the switch anywhere you want to inside the trailer.

According to Kevin, on a regular RV hookup, you have a hose where all the waste is collected. With the electric gate valve, you have a bayonet fitting and little nubs to where the sewer hose connects and locks itself in place.

Gary demonstrates how the electric gate valve works, saying that you want to install it as close as possible to the tank itself. It is a permanently mounted device and a simple hose clamp can keep it in place.

One of the advantages of this system is that when you are in the camp grounds and you are monitoring your fluid level in the waste tank, and you notice it is time to empty them, you just walk over to your switch, and in less than a second, that gate valve slides open and evacuates the entire contents in the sewer hose.
