Water Pump

Airstream Water Pump

In this video, Kevin Tetz in his show Classic Rides, replaces the plumbing system in the vintage 1970 Airstream Overland Yacht Trailer. Just like the trailer, the original water pump installed in this Airstream is antique as well. It is more than thirty years old. And because this is their main source of drinking water, Kevin wants it replaced right away.

To do this, Kevin disconnects the power on the trailer. He removes the water lines. From the water pump, he removes the pre-filter and pulls the water line loose from the brass connector. He also loosens the fitting. Kevin advises us that when working with brass connectors, you should always hold the hard wire line in place so that you do not crack or break it.

The new pump that he is installing is more modern. It is quieter and more energy efficient. He likes it because it has a cleanable pre-filter. So when it is full of debris, all you have to do is take the canister off and wash it out.

Next, Kevin hand threads an elbow into the copper line, so that he does not cross-thread the fitting. He attaches the filter canister in a downward position and puts a "ninety" on the side. He uses a wrench to tighten the pump while he holds the elbow fitting. He says that the trick with these fittings is to put them on until they bottom out. Then, hold the base while you tighten their top. When it makes a squeaking sound, you can tighten the top full turn, with a wrench.

Then, Kevin cuts a piece of PEX pipe and squeezes it into the bracket. He uses gentle pressure, making sure it is about center. He reminds us not to force it in the bracket or else it might snap. He attaches another PEX pipe into the main line. Next, he hooks up the wiring. Using a wire stripper, he strips the main power lines, making sure the connections are nice and tight. Of course, the main power must be turned off before doing this.

And voila! The installation of the new water pump is done!
