Airstream Windows

In this segment of Classic Rides, host Kevin Tetz works on the windows of this vintage trailer. The weather-strips on the windows are already shot. Luckily, there are exact replacements for the weather seams still available today because of the Airstream's popularity.

To remove the old weather-strips, Kevin uses a scraper and an adhesive remover along the window's edges where the old weather strips can be found. He uses a scuffing pad to really clean out the crevices. Next, he takes an abrasive pad with aluminum polish to clean the oxidized and discolored areas. He finishes off with a wool pad to buff the surfaces. Now the window's edges look brand new.

Kevin uses a black weather-strip adhesive along the aluminum frame of the window. He uses his finger to lightly wipe the adhesive along the rest of the surface, to spread it out evenly. He also applies the adhesive on the weather-strip. Kevin says that both surfaces need the adhesive.

Kevin initially wraps the strip around the window without actually making contact. Next he carefully presses the strip into place and makes sure that he gives the corners extra attention. He says that you should not stretch the strip around the corner, instead force it into the curve.

It is always better to have a long piece of weather-strip to work with so that all the edges are sealed. Kevin carefully cuts the weather-strip with a single edged blade and seals the window entirely.

Before re-installing the windows, Kevin points out the steel brackets on the window. They are old and rusty. He uses an abrasive pad to clean the steel brackets and paints them with a rust-prohibitive silver paint. The window looks like a million bucks!
Kevin installs new window guides as well. He uses the exact replacements for this. He also polishes the metal hardware of the windows. The refinished windows slip back into the hinge easily.
